After 15 Years, Instagram Finally Arrives on iPad: What You Need to Know!

After much anticipation, Instagram has released a dedicated app for iPad. Starting September 3rd, users can download this app designed specifically for Apple’s tablet. While it shares features with the mobile app, there are some key differences.

One standout feature is that the app opens directly to a Reels feed, Instagram’s answer to TikTok. This focus on short videos marks a shift reflecting current trends in social media. Reports earlier this year hinted at an iPad version, motivated by the challenges TikTok faced in the U.S. market. With competitors under scrutiny, Instagram’s move makes strategic sense.

The iPad app also retains classic functions. Stories will still appear at the top, and users can switch to a “Following” tab for a more personalized feed, including a chronological option. The larger screen offers a better viewing experience: comments will show next to videos, and direct messages (DMs) will be more accessible, similar to what users see on Messenger.

Interestingly, Instagram head Adam Mosseri previously claimed the demand for an iPad app wasn’t strong enough to prioritize. However, changing user demographics, with more kids using tablets, might have influenced this decision. TikTok’s recent regulatory issues may have also prompted a quicker rollout.

This shift towards Reels isn’t just a trend for Instagram. Recent statistics show that short-form videos are gaining huge traction across platforms. For example, research from 2022 indicates that videos under a minute receive significantly higher engagement compared to longer formats on social media.

As Instagram continues to evolve, it is clear that the future is leaning heavily towards video content, especially in the competitive landscape of social media.
