Fei-Fei Li, a Stanford computer scientist and founder, is known as “the Godmother of AI.” She recently shared three key principles for shaping AI policy, especially with the upcoming AI Action Summit in Paris.
First, she emphasized that policies should be grounded in reality. Li believes that decisions about AI should focus on what it is today, not on imaginary futures, whether they are idealistic or catastrophic. Understanding AI as it exists now, including tools like chatbots, is vital. These technologies do not possess intentions or consciousness, which means it’s important for policymakers to look at real challenges rather than get caught up in wild scenarios.
Second, Li stressed the need for practical policies. She suggests that guidelines should aim to reduce unexpected negative effects while still encouraging innovation. This approach can help foster a healthier environment for AI development.
Lastly, Li highlighted the importance of supporting everyone in the AI community. This means providing access to AI models and tools, especially for open-source projects and academics. She pointed out that limiting access could hinder progress, particularly for researchers who may not have the same resources as large companies. By empowering all contributors, we can encourage more inclusive advancements in AI.
