The North Carolina A&T men’s tennis team faced a tough challenge when they played against the Georgia Bulldogs, the 28th-ranked team according to the International Tennis Association (ITA). The match ended with a 5-1 loss for the Aggies, but it was far from a disappointing day for them.

Sophomore Said Akbarov stood out by claiming victory at No. 3 singles, defeating Filipe Costa 6-3, 6-4. This win marked the highlight of Akbarov’s week, having already secured three consecutive wins in singles matches earlier in the week. Teammate Lucas Coupo-Moison expressed great pride in Akbarov’s success. “He deserves it,” he said.

Akbarov’s victory is significant, especially considering it was against a Power Five conference team. This year, he has achieved a remarkable record with 14 singles wins, bringing his total to 14-2.

Reflecting on the match, Akbarov said, “It was tough because I had to win every point on my own. My opponent didn’t give anything away.” His strong serving and forehand were key to his success.

Head coach Dejon Bivens was also proud of the team’s resilience. “Our mission was to take it to them, and on a few courts, we did just that,” he noted. This match marks the second time this season an Aggie defeated a ranked opponent; senior Ian Pedersen previously triumphed over a player from the No. 1 Wake Forest.

Despite the team’s overall loss, the match showcased the players’ determination. For example, Kaua Santos showed remarkable fighting spirit, even though he lost in a hard-fought battle at No. 4 singles.

The Aggies now hold a record of 13-4 for the season. They will take a break from competition before facing Campbell University on April 9. Coach Bivens aims to continue fostering talent within the team, highlighting the importance of leaving a mark on their conference and beyond.

According to recent NCAA statistics, the average winning percentage of ranked teams has been around 70% in collegiate tennis, emphasizing the significance of the Aggies’ performance against a higher-ranked opponent. As the season progresses, the Aggies’ persistence and skill on the court will be essential as they aim for further victories.
