Food shortages are a pressing issue that requires teamwork to resolve. In February, Alpha Gamma Delta became the first Greek organization to partner with Table to Table, New Jersey’s largest food rescue service.
Sarah Hart, a junior studying finance and economics and president of Alpha Gamma Delta, shared how the partnership began. It all started when her mom posted about Sarah taking on her new role and highlighted the sorority’s efforts in philanthropy. A friend of her mom’s, who works with Table to Table, saw a great match between their mission and Alpha Gamma Delta’s focus on fighting hunger.
Arianna Valte, vice president of philanthropy and a sophomore in biology, emphasized that hunger is about more than just having enough food. “Hunger affects your mental, physical, and emotional health,” she said. “Proper nutrition is vital for my ability to study and succeed.”
Valte pointed out that the type of food delivered matters. “Table to Table emphasizes nutritious meals over processed options,” she noted, stressing the importance of healthy food for those in need. Hart echoed this sentiment, explaining that the organization collects fresh food to provide to elderly homes, families, and shelters, preventing waste and helping those who are hungry.
Elizabeth Fleming, vice president of administration and a junior in public relations, mentioned the partnership’s spiritual aspect. “One event delivered food to a church, which resonated with many of our members who value faith,” she said.
Alpha Gamma Delta actively participates in food rescues every Friday. They collect food from Seton Hall University and Newark Academy, then deliver it to the Jesus Saves Boarding Home, which serves meals to residents. Additionally, they’ve hosted sandwich-making events to combat food insecurity in Orange, New Jersey. “At one event, we made 523 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, all delivered to those in need,” Fleming shared.
These events are not only about service but also about having fun. Hart explained that the group engages in friendly competition to see who can make the most sandwiches or collect the most food. “Bringing enthusiasm makes these days enjoyable,” she said.
Looking ahead, Alpha Gamma Delta aims to strengthen its partnership with Table to Table. “This collaboration allows us to engage with our community and live our values,” said Molly Quigley-Sanborn, a biology and psychology major involved in community services. Fleming reflected on the meaningful opportunities this partnership provides, highlighting the joy of making a difference in people’s lives.
Food insecurity is a significant challenge affecting many communities. According to recent statistics from Feeding America, as of 2021, around 38 million people in the United States, including about 12 million children, are food insecure. Grassroots organizations like Table to Table play a crucial role in bridging this gap.
The collaboration between Alpha Gamma Delta and Table to Table is a testament to how organizations can come together for a cause that impacts many lives. By focusing on nutritious food and community involvement, they are making strides to alleviate hunger locally and create lasting change.
