In the heart of Sancti Spiritus lies El Avion, a once-thriving restaurant built inside a retired Antonov An-24. This unique dining spot accommodated 24 guests, creating a memorable experience right from the moment customers walked in. They entered through a terminal-like setup, where a “captain” welcomed them before boarding the plane. It seemed like a playful journey, although the aircraft was firmly on the ground.

When it first opened, El Avion generated a buzz. People were intrigued by the idea of dining in an airplane. However, over the years, the excitement faded. Today, the restaurant’s paint peels, the door remains closed, and only a few passersby show any interest. The plaza around it feels deserted, and a guard confirms that it’s closed with no plans for reopening.

The Antonov, designed in the late 1950s, offered diners a taste of what it might be like to fly. Many visitors were locals, some experiencing an airplane for the first time, even as the plane sat grounded. After their meals, staff would gently remind them it was time to “deplane” to make way for others.

However, not all experiences were positive. One local recalled celebrating his birthday there, only to be disappointed by the poor food quality. He ordered shrimp but found it unappetizing. Despite these complaints, the restaurant captured the hearts of many, especially children. For them, it was a dream to board a plane, even if just for dinner. Regrettably, simple amenities like bathrooms and waiting areas often fell short of expectations.

Today, remnants of the restaurant’s former glory linger. The Cuban flag on the plane has faded, much like the restaurant’s once-vibrant energy. Years of neglect have made it hard for El Avion to continue as a dining spot. It stands as a reminder of dreams that once took flight but have since come to a halt.
