Anthony and Julia Durocher of Chaminade University of Honolulu Preserve Legacy

The Durocher family maintains a strong connection with Chaminade University. Anthony graduated this year, while his sister Julia is set to enter her junior year this fall. The siblings are from St. Catherine Church in Kapaa, Kauai.

Sister Malia Dominica Wong, OP conducted an interview with Anthony and Julia about their experiences and faith journey at Chaminade.

Anthony noted that while choosing Chaminade was ultimately his decision, it was guided by the encouragement of his parents, especially his mother. He mentioned that many family members were already students at the university, including his brother Joseph, who was in a master’s program when Anthony started his freshman year. He added that his younger brother Andrew will also attend next year.

Julia expressed gratitude for their parents’ desire for them to attend Chaminade, emphasizing that their family connection to the university is growing with more siblings and cousins planning to come.

Sister Malia asked how they maintain their faith while at university. Julia explained that their strong upbringing has been important, but that ultimately, one must choose their faith for themselves. She emphasized the importance of recognizing God as their Creator and noted that adhering to His ways leads to true happiness. She recalled impactful experiences such as attending the Steubenville youth conference, a pilgrimage to Rome, and meeting the pope, which deepened their faith and helped them recognize the reality of God.

Julia highlighted their involvement in youth ministry at St. Catherine’s and noted that the Rome pilgrimage was facilitated through Chaminade.

Anthony reflected on his first experience at a Steubenville conference at age 19, calling it a turning point in his faith journey. He mentioned a conversation with his pastor, Father Nick Apetorgbor, about reaching young people and concluded that transformative experiences outside of their comfort zones, like conferences and pilgrimages, are essential for spiritual growth.

Sister Malia inquired about how they maintain their faith. Anthony replied that accepting God’s mercy is crucial, acknowledging that faith is a daily choice. Julia added that the flame of faith can fluctuate, and during times of distance, she prays to the Holy Spirit for renewal in her faith.
