The UNC System Board of Governors has officially chosen Heather Hulburt Norris as the new chancellor of Appalachian State University. This decision came after her time as interim chancellor, a role she took on when Sheri Everts stepped down in April 2024 after ten years in the position.

Norris has been part of the App State community for more than 20 years, starting her career there in 2003 as an assistant professor in finance, banking, and insurance. Over the years, she has held several leadership roles, including serving as the dean of the Walker College of Business and later as provost.
UNC System President Peter Hans praised Norris during a Board meeting, emphasizing her deep understanding of the university and her impressive track record. “She has been a steady and healing presence” during the tough times following Hurricane Helene, which impacted the Boone campus and the surrounding region.
Norris expressed her passion for the university, stating that she was drawn there due to its strong commitment to student success. She looks forward to continuing her work and enhancing the university’s academic excellence while also serving the local communities.
With this appointment, Norris becomes one of several chancellors who have moved from interim to permanent positions within the UNC System over the past two years. This trend follows a period of high turnover, often linked to delays caused by the pandemic and natural transitions in leadership.
Currently, there are still two chancellor searches ongoing in the UNC System: one at Elizabeth City State University and another at North Carolina State University, as Randy Woodson plans to step down in June after over 14 years at the helm.
Norris’s appointment marks a notable moment for Appalachian State and reflects a broader movement within the UNC System to establish stable leadership as it navigates recent challenges.
