Apple is shaking things up for its iPhone releases next year. The company plans to introduce its first foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Air models. This means the standard iPhone 18 will be pushed back to spring 2027, where it will launch alongside the iPhone 16E.
With the addition of a foldable model, Apple has to adjust its lineup to manage the growing array of options. This foldable is set to have a book-style design, featuring a 5.7-inch screen when closed and an almost 8-inch display when open. Renowned supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has stated that this device will not only be slim—around 4.5 to 4.8 mm thick when unfolded—but will also introduce Face ID instead of the old Touch ID.
In addition to the new foldable, Apple is also working on a new battery case for the iPhone 17 Air. Testing indicates that the phone’s battery life may not match that of earlier models, hence this effort to boost performance. Moreover, the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max models will feature under-display Face ID sensors, leaving just a small hole for the front-facing camera.
Experts believe that these changes indicate Apple’s commitment to innovation while facing competition. As companies like Samsung continue to lead in the foldable market, Apple must deliver exciting features to win over customers. According to a recent survey by Counterpoint Research, the global foldable phone market is projected to grow by 50% over the next few years. This trend shows that consumers are eager for new technology, and Apple’s entry could significantly impact the market.
