The University of Northern Colorado’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNC COM) has recently received Pre-accreditation status from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA). This milestone allows them to start recruiting students for their first class in fall 2026. UNC COM is the first public osteopathic college in Colorado and the third medical college in the state.
Situated on a traditional college campus, UNC COM offers a unique blend of medical education and interdisciplinary learning. Students will have access to faculty from various fields like behavioral sciences and public health, which promotes teamwork and collaboration. This approach mirrors modern healthcare’s emphasis on comprehensive patient care.
Once fully operational, UNC COM plans to enroll 150 medical students annually. This initiative comes at a crucial time as Colorado faces a significant physician shortage. The Association of American Medical Colleges projects a nationwide shortage of about 896,000 physicians by 2036. In Colorado, 53 out of 64 counties are already designated as areas lacking sufficient primary care professionals.
Osteopathic physicians are known for their focus on primary care and service to rural communities. Beth Longenecker, the Founding Dean, envisions UNC COM as a key player in improving healthcare access in Colorado. She emphasizes that the school will prepare students not just academically but also equip them with the empathy needed for patient-centered care.
With its strong health science programs, UNC is set to earn its place in medical education. Located in Greeley, a rapidly growing city, the new college will educate students who will likely work in both rural and urban areas. The faculty boasts over 200 years of combined experience, ready to guide students through real-world challenges.
Construction of the state-of-the-art medical facility began in September 2024 and will be ready for the first class. The 110,000-square-foot building will include modern labs and flexible learning spaces designed for today’s educational needs.
Financial support for UNC COM comes from the State of Colorado and local organizations. It’s anticipated that over 18 years, this initiative could inject $1.4 billion into Colorado’s economy, benefiting local communities like Weld County significantly.
