LONDON — Police are investigating a series of arson attacks on Jewish sites in London. They suspect that Iranian proxies may be behind these incidents. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis stated that British Jews are facing a troubling rise in violence and intimidation.
The Metropolitan Police’s counter-terrorism unit is looking into multiple fires at synagogues and other Jewish community locations. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far. The latest fire occurred at a synagogue in north London on Saturday night.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans mentioned that a group called Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia has claimed responsibility for these attacks online. The group is thought to have connections to Iran. Evans pointed out that this might be part of a broader trend involving the Iranian regime using criminal proxies for violence, including attacks in Europe.
Israel’s government has labeled Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia as a new group linked to Iranian activities. This group has also claimed responsibility for similar synagogue attacks in Belgium and the Netherlands.
In response, the police have increased their presence in northwest London. There have been several incidents in just the past month, including attacks on Jewish charity ambulances and a Persian-language media outlet that is critical of Iran.
The most severe incident involved the destruction of four ambulances belonging to a Jewish charity in Golders Green on March 23.
No one has been hurt in any of these attacks, but a number of individuals have been arrested. Chief Rabbi Mirvis expressed deep concern on social media about the escalating violence, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attacks, pledging to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice. He stated that these attacks represent a broader threat to society as a whole.
In an unsettling development, Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia released a video implying plans to target Israel’s London embassy using drones. While police investigated, they shut down Kensington Gardens but found no harmful substances.
Recent statistics from MI5 indicate that British intelligence has disrupted over 20 Iran-backed plots targeting opposition media and the Jewish community within a year. Security experts have noted that Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia might not be a well-organized group, and their claims should be approached cautiously.
Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes made it clear that any individuals involved in these acts of violence, described as “thugs for hire,” will face serious consequences. He warned that those currently serving long prison sentences illustrate the dangerous path these individuals are choosing.
