DYER, Ind. – Franciscan Health is launching a free speaker series aimed at supporting those who care for aging loved ones. This initiative addresses the unique challenges caregivers face, helping them improve the lives of those they care for while managing their own emotional well-being.
The series will take place at Franciscan Senior Health & Wellness, located at 2150 Gettler St., Suite 305, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time. The first session kicks off on May 14, focusing on the benefits and strategies for helping a loved one age at home. Experts from Franciscan Home Care and the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) will share their insights.
The second session is set for August 20 and will tackle how to navigate a cancer diagnosis as a caregiver. It will also cover helpful Medicare enrollment options. Professionals from Franciscan Health Cancer Center Munster and Franciscan Insurance Services will be on hand to provide valuable information.
On October 8, the final session will discuss advanced planning topics such as elder law, long-term care, hospice, and advanced-care directives. Speakers from Franciscan Health Senior Promise and Franciscan Hospice Care will lead this important discussion.
Each session will include a group discussion and offer light refreshments, fostering a sense of community among participants. Although attendance is free, participants must register by calling (219) 864-2630.
Insights from experts suggest that caregiver support groups can significantly improve mental health. Research indicates that caregivers who engage in supportive conversations report lower stress levels. A recent survey showed that over 60% of caregivers feel isolated, underlining the importance of gatherings like this series.
These sessions come at a crucial time. As our population ages, the role of caregivers is becoming increasingly significant. In 2020, the U.S. Census reported that nearly 1 in 5 Americans provided care to an adult family member. Events like this speaker series help equip caregivers with the knowledge and connections they need to thrive.
