Recently, OpenAI’s ChatGPT raised some eyebrows when users found out their shared conversations could be indexed by Google. This happened because not everyone understood the implications of a sharing option they clicked. However, OpenAI quickly decided to stop indexing these chats.

On the flip side, Meta’s MetaAI app allows users to share their conversations publicly, which Google can index. This means you might find chats about anything—from birthday balloon recommendations to personal advice—if they were shared under the app’s Discover feature.

Here’s the catch: Several users, while wanting to share, accidentally exposed private information, including phone numbers and personal questions. Some might not have realized that sharing meant their chats were visible to everyone.

To address this, Meta has added a warning pop-up that clarifies: “Conversations on feed are public so anyone can see them and engage.” This seems to have helped. Now, I mostly see people using the Discover feed for things like image creation instead of sharing intimate chats.

Daniel Roberts from Meta confirmed that chats in the Discover feed will keep being indexed by Google. Currently, Meta AI can only be used via mobile, making it feel a bit isolated—almost like a walled garden. Yet, shared conversations can still appear online and be searched, which might confuse users.

Interestingly, some people may want to share their AI interactions publicly. Perhaps they perceive it as a way to boost their online presence. However, it raises a question: why would anyone want their private chats to be read by strangers?
