Microsoft is making a big move by removing passwords for all users. The tech giant has warned that passwords are easy to forget or guess. With over a billion users, Microsoft aims to eliminate passwords entirely.
The company highlighted the dangers of passwords, stating that “bad actors” are ramping up attacks. In fact, they block about 7,000 password attacks every second, nearly double from last year. Microsoft believes it’s time to promote passkeys, a more secure alternative.
Starting in April, most users will notice a fresh way to sign in and sign up on web and mobile apps. Instead of creating a password, you’ll enter your email and verify it with a one-time code. This approach means you can start using your account without setting up a password at all.
Once you’re logged in, you’ll set up your passkey, which is much faster and more secure than traditional passwords. Microsoft points out that having both passwords and passkeys isn’t safe. If a phishing attack happens, it could still compromise your account. So, the goal is to completely remove passwords and focus on safer, phishing-resistant methods.
Recent data supports this shift toward passwordless authentication. A report by HYPR indicates that within two years, FIDO passkeys could become the most common way to log in online, which would significantly reduce the risk of phishing attacks.
Despite this progress, other major platforms still support passwords as backup options, which can leave users vulnerable. The call for clarity and consistency across all platforms is vital as we move toward a safer digital future, free from traditional passwords.
