“It’s time for all of us to take action,” Obama said, stressing that ordinary citizens should speak up when they disagree with harmful policies. He expressed particular concern over the Trump administration’s stance on universities, specifically the pressure on them to hand over students who exercise their right to free speech. Obama suggested that colleges should be ready to defend their values, even at the risk of losing government support. “If you believe in your principles, you should stand tall,” he encouraged. In recent statistics, about 60% of college students reported feeling pressure to limit their speech due to fears of backlash from peers or administration, according to a survey by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. Obama also raised questions about corporate law firms that have been quiet regarding the administration’s actions, referencing past instances where similar behaviors were not tolerated. For instance, he noted a situation where the Associated Press was restricted from covering events due to the agency’s stance against Trump’s policy changes, such as the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico.
In today’s polarized climate, Obama believes that merely supporting causes is not enough. “Now, it’s time to take real steps,” he concluded.
