Bharat Forge Ltd and the Andhra Pradesh government have teamed up to create India’s first private-sector facility for Marine Gas Turbine (MGT) repair and development in Visakhapatnam. This initiative aims to boost India’s self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
Recently, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project in Puttaparthi, along with plans for drone manufacturing. These projects are set to strengthen Andhra Pradesh’s role in the aerospace and defense industry.
The MGT facility will be situated on 80 acres within the Andhra Pradesh Defence Manufacturing Corridor, near the Naval Dockyard. It represents a significant shift in India’s defense strategy, moving repair and development capabilities from foreign firms to the private sector. This change is crucial, especially since recent global supply chain issues have disrupted maintenance cycles for naval vessels.
Phase 1 of the project will focus on establishing a full MGT repair complex, which will include advanced restoration and manufacturing capabilities. It promises a rapid turnaround for repairs, enhancing the operational readiness of India’s naval fleet. Phase 2 aims to set up development and assembly halls, marking the first time an indigenous MGT will be produced in the private sector.
Bharat Forge’s Vice Chairman Amit Kalyani emphasized that this facility will end India’s reliance on foreign marine engines. With gas turbines being vital for naval operations, building this capability domestically will ensure greater stability and efficiency for the country’s defense needs.
In total, the facility is expected to create around 750 jobs, contributing to the local economy while establishing Visakhapatnam as a regional repair hub for other nations’ navies.
