Billionaire Tyler Perry Opens Up: Why He Cut Ties with Family and Refused to be Their ‘Welfare’

Tyler Perry is all about tough love when it comes to money. The media mogul, with a net worth of over $1.4 billion, doesn’t believe in handing out financial help to family members without expecting something in return.

In a recent episode of the YouTube series “Den of Kings,” Perry shared his experience with a family member who frequently asked for money. Instead of giving cash, Perry offered her a job. “I want to help you build something, not just give you welfare,” he said.

However, his relative didn’t take the job seriously and often called in sick. Eventually, Perry had to fire her. “You want my help, but you don’t want to work for it. That doesn’t work for me,” he explained.

Perry’s approach doesn’t stop with relatives. He uses the same philosophy with his son, Aman. “I don’t believe in giving things that handicap us,” he noted. Perry lost his mother in 2009. After her passing, he wrote to family members he was asked to support financially, stating they had 60 days to find a job. “It wasn’t about the money; it was about pride,” he reflected. Surprisingly, all of them did find work.

His parenting style keeps Aman grounded. This aligns with recent statistics showing that children who work for their money tend to develop stronger financial skills later. Perry noted he only buys his son “books and Legos” for Christmas. They often fly coach to teach Aman the value of hard work. “He understands I worked for it; he didn’t,” Perry said, emphasizing the importance of instilling a solid work ethic from a young age.

This mindset isn’t just personal; it resonates with experts in finance and parenting alike. Research suggests that hands-on financial education, starting young, can lead to responsible adult behaviors. Wealth management professionals advocate for teaching kids how to earn and save as a way to ensure they’ll handle money wisely in the future.

Perry has built an empire, owning 100% of his projects. His “Madea” franchise has grossed over $660 million. Despite his success, his philosophy of self-reliance and hard work remains steadfast. As a public figure, he highlights that wealth should not come without responsibility and effort.

This approach has not only shaped Perry’s family dynamics but has become a point of discussion in various social media circles. Many users applaud his stance, seeing it as a healthy way to raise kids amid a culture of entitlement. Perry’s methods serve as a reminder that hard work and respect for money can lead to long-lasting success.

By focusing on the value of hard work, Perry sets an example that extends beyond his own family, showing that real success is about responsibility, not just wealth.
