Delhi BJP president Virendraa Sachdeva recently criticized former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal for attending a 10-day Vipassana meditation retreat in Punjab. According to Sachdeva, Kejriwal has not let go of his extravagant, VIP lifestyle. He claimed that the retreat is just a ploy to misuse taxpayer money.
Sachdeva remarked, “This is not Vipassana; it’s just another way for him to enjoy luxury while pretending to practice meditation.” He believes that instead of seeking spiritual solace, Kejriwal should feel guilty for misusing public funds.
Kejriwal arrived at a guest house in Hoshiarpur for his retreat, protected by a large security detail. Critics highlighted the excessive arrangements for his visit, including a convoy of luxury cars valued over ₹2 crores. Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa pointed out, “What kind of common man needs such security and luxury for a meditation retreat?”
Others echoed similar sentiments. Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma, another Delhi Minister, suggested that Kejriwal is more focused on his political ambitions than on genuine meditation. He speculated that Kejriwal is positioning himself for a future role in Punjab after failing to secure victory in Delhi.
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) also criticized the warm welcome Kejriwal received, questioning why he was treated with such honor when he has no official standing in the state. Senior SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema stated, “This red carpet treatment is unnecessary and inappropriate.”
Kejriwal’s retreat coincides with upcoming elections in Punjab, with AAP aiming to solidify its influence in the region. He has been practicing Vipassana for a few years, visiting various centers across India to delve into this meditation technique.
While Kejriwal seeks inner peace, the spotlight remains on his actions and how they relate to his political interests. The clash between his spiritual pursuits and his lifestyle continues to stir debate in the political arena.
