Blockbuster Alert: ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Soars to $118 Million Opening Weekend!

Marvel’s new film, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” has made a strong start at the box office. Over its opening weekend, it earned $118 million from 4,125 theaters in North America, exceeding predictions of $100 million to $110 million. The film, featuring stars like Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby, also added $100 million from international markets. This brings its global total to $218 million.

This movie comes during a challenging time for Marvel Studios. Although they have delivered hits in recent years with films starring well-known characters, such as “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” newer characters haven’t fared as well. For instance, the May release “Thunderbolts” ended with $382 million, making it one of the lowest-grossing films in Marvel’s history.

To sustain its momentum, “The Fantastic Four” needs to maintain audience interest. It has good reviews, holding an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a strong “A-” grade from CinemaScore surveys. With little major competition around, the film has a chance to thrive.

Historically, the Fantastic Four has struggled on the big screen. Prior attempts, like the 2005 and 2007 films featuring Jessica Alba, achieved some box office success but received negative reviews. A poorly received reboot in 2015 flopped, making just $167 million globally. David A. Gross, an analyst at Franchise Entertainment Research, noted, “Fantastic Four was a modest and struggling superhero series; it just caught up with the biggest and the best.”

In this ongoing superhero resurgence, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” ranks as the fourth-largest domestic debut of the year, following titles like “A Minecraft Movie.” Meanwhile, “Superman,” released closely before, slipped to second place, bringing in $24.9 million in its second weekend. It has currently grossed $289.5 million domestically.

Gross commented that both “Fantastic Four” and “Superman” are performing well, signaling positive news for the industry. As superhero movies dominate, it appears audiences are ready to embrace them again.

In the wider box office landscape, Universal’s “Jurassic World Rebirth” took third place with $13 million and has grossed $301 million domestically. Apple’s racing film, “F1: The Movie,” reached a commendable $6.2 million, marking Apple’s highest-grossing film ever.

With superhero films showing resilience and audience interest returning, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” could pave the way for more successful adaptations in the future.
