In his first match since Ian Evatt’s departure, Darby led the team to victory against Huddersfield Town, who were on a 16-game unbeaten streak. This win keeps Bolton’s hopes for a playoff spot alive.

As they prepare to face Northampton Town on Tuesday, Darby highlighted that being just one point away from the top six is an encouraging sign for the next manager. “There’s a lot still to play for this season,” he shared. Despite a challenging January with several games, he feels the situation isn’t too bad.

“It’s been tough with seven games already this month. That’s a lot for the players to handle, both physically and mentally,” he said. The team is also recovering from a busy holiday season, and maintaining that energy is crucial.

While Darby is set to guide the team again in their next League One match, there is buzz about potential candidates for the permanent position, including former Preston North End coach Ryan Lowe and Steven Schumacher, who used to manage Plymouth Argyle.

Darby, who is also the Under-18s coach, admits that he doesn’t see a long-term career in management for himself. He respects the commitment it takes, stating that coaching can be intense. “I’ve been around the game enough to know the pressures that come with being a manager. Those who choose to do it are truly special,” he explained.

Despite the challenges, Darby recognizes the joy that comes with good results. “When everything clicks, like it did last Saturday, it makes it all worthwhile. The support from the fans makes a big difference,” he added.
