LAREDO, Tex. – A staggering 50% of first responders and law enforcement officials struggle with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This rate jumps to about 100% for those frequently exposed to trauma.
First responders, like firefighters, EMTs, and police officers, face nearly 100 traumatic events each year. In contrast, an average person might experience only five to ten traumatic events throughout their entire life.
To support these brave individuals, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) offers the Victim and Employee Support Services (VESS) program. This initiative helps DPS employees cope with stress and trauma. Sergeant Erick Estrada highlights how important this support is, especially after serious incidents. He explains that after a major accident, a Peer Support member reaches out to every officer involved, ensuring they aren’t left to handle the aftermath alone.
The VESS program includes counselors, psychologists, and peer supporters who guide first responders through their challenges. Best of all, this service is free for employees, and they can easily reach out via email, text, or phone.
It’s crucial to recognize and support those who protect our communities. Awareness of mental health issues among first responders is more vital than ever. A recent survey conducted by the National Institute of Justice found that 63% of law enforcement officials report heightened stress due to their experiences on the job, leading to a growing demand for mental health resources.
