Foreign direct investment (FDI) from India to the United States has hit around $16.4 billion. This investment has created nearly 70,800 jobs in the U.S., according to Brandon Remington, a senior official from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Remington spoke at the CII India Reception during the SelectUSA Investment Summit in Maryland, highlighting that Indian companies also invested about $330 million in research and development across America.
Interestingly, a recent report from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) suggests that total Indian investments in the U.S. could be as high as $40 billion, generating an impressive 425,000 jobs. This surge shows the growing economic ties between the two nations.
The CII’s “Indian Roots, American Soil” report noted that Indian firms invested $1 billion in R&D projects in the U.S. and contributed $195 million to social responsibility efforts. Additionally, last week, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries announced a $12 billion deal to acquire Organon & Co., based in New Jersey.
At the SelectUSA summit, several Indian companies are expected to announce new investments. Officials from various states, including Delaware and Guam, attended the event, underlining the importance of these ties. Namgya Khampa, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy, emphasized that Indian firms are crucial to the U.S. economy. They boost job creation, enhance supply chains, and contribute positively to communities, especially in sectors like manufacturing and pharmaceuticals.
According to the CII report, Texas leads the states in receiving Indian FDI at $9.8 billion, followed by Georgia with $7.5 billion and New Jersey at $4.2 billion. This trend reflects how Indian businesses are becoming integral players in the U.S. market.
