Rachel Garrison, the activity coordinator, explained that the fair simplifies access to important health information. “We have several local health facilities here with valuable resources and giveaways,” she noted. This accessibility is crucial for seniors who might feel overwhelmed by the variety of services available.
Organizations participating included the Washington County Health Department, Right at Home, and the Alzheimer’s Association, among others. With so many options, Garrison emphasized the fair’s role in bridging gaps for seniors who struggle to navigate available services.
The event featured free blood pressure screenings and details about various support programs, such as those from RSVP-AmeriCorps Seniors. Airika West from that program mentioned its focus on individuals 55 and older, offering volunteer opportunities and rides to medical appointments. “We aim to help seniors stay connected and engaged,” she said.
The impact of the fair is clear. Garrison observed an improvement in attendees’ health and stress levels. “It helps them feel more at ease about their health needs,” she shared.
Beyond the health fair, the O’Neill Center offers many services to promote independence for those age 50 and over. Many people might not be aware of all the programs available to them. As Garrison pointed out, “Our activities, like bingo and crafts, are mostly free and aim to enrich life.”
Transportation services are particularly vital for seniors. Lisa Turner Sherman, the assistant director, mentioned how they help people get to medical appointments without added anxiety. “All our vehicles are accessible, which means seniors don’t have to worry about driving themselves,” she explained.
The day center provides a supportive atmosphere for seniors needing assistance but wanting to maintain independence. Sherman described it as “a home away from home,” offering nutritious meals and activities, which also benefits caregivers by giving them a much-needed break.
In recent years, there has been a notable increase in interest in senior services. According to a recent report, about 60% of seniors express a desire for more community resources tailored to their needs. The O’Neill Center is stepping up to fill this gap, exemplifying a growing trend in community support for older adults.
