Box Office Shock: ‘Regretting You’ Leads Most Disappointing Halloween Weekend in 31 Years with Just .1 Million

Paramount and Constantin Films have launched a new romance-drama, Regretting You, based on a book by Colleen Hoover. This is the second adaptation of her work, following It Ends With Us. It’s been making waves this Halloween season, but there’s some confusion about its box office performance.

Initial estimates show Regretting You took the top spot this weekend with $8.1 million across 3,245 theaters. However, Universal claims their horror movie, Black Phone 2, might have edged ahead with $8 million from 3,425 theaters. Last weekend, Regretting You had a surprising victory over Black Phone 2, leaving everyone eager to see the final numbers on Monday.

This Halloween weekend has seen some disappointing results overall, with ticket sales dropping to $49.8 million. That’s the lowest Halloween box office gross in 31 years, excluding the pandemic year of 2020. The last comparable weekend was in 1993, which garnered only $49.2 million—not adjusted for inflation. Paul Dergarabedian from Comscore pointed out that this dramatic drop highlights an ongoing trend; October 2023 is the weakest October in 27 years.

The lack of a major film release, like the anticipated Venom: The Last Dance in 2024, has left theaters with a mix of holdovers and rereleases. Regretting You suffered particularly on Friday as many of its target audience—young women—were preoccupied with Halloween festivities. But it bounced back on Saturday, showing a remarkable 200% increase in sales.

So far, Regretting You has made $27.5 million domestically in its first ten days and has added $8.2 million internationally, bringing its global total to around $50.8 million. In contrast, Black Phone 2 continues to shine, surpassing $104 million overall after bringing in $61.5 million domestically.

Another film on the radar is the Japanese manga adaptation, Chainsaw Man – the Movie: Reze Arc, which fell steeply in its second weekend with a 67% drop, earning $6 million for a total of $30.8 million domestically and an impressive $139 million worldwide.

In a nutshell, this Halloween weekend proves challenging for Hollywood. As cinema owners grapple with these figures, it’s clear they’ll need bigger titles to attract audiences in upcoming weeks.
