Brave Raleigh Child Saves Friend from Choking with Heimlich Maneuver: A Heroic Rescue Story

A 9-year-old boy at a Raleigh charter school became a hero when he saved a classmate from choking.

The second grader was struggling to breathe when his friend sprang into action.

This young hero made his parents proud, surprised by his brave deed.

What happened on the playground is a reminder of how friendships often form during childhood play. For Jayceon Branch and Donye Moore at Raleigh Oak Charter Academy, their bond was tested on the basketball court during recess.

“Last week, we were playing basketball when Donye ate a granola bar,” Jayceon recalled. “We kept playing until I noticed him choking.”

The dramatic moment was recorded by the school’s surveillance cameras.

The video shows Donye, in a dark shirt, bending over as he gasps for air. Jayceon, wearing white, rushed over and used the Heimlich maneuver to help him.

“He was trying to say ‘hold on,’ but he couldn’t because he was choking,” Jayceon explained. “I didn’t know it was serious, so I just acted.”

Jayceon did what he learned online and saved his friend without hesitation.

“Jayceon jumped into action so quickly,” said Eric Johnson, the Executive Director at Raleigh Oak Charter School. “We’re really proud of him.”

“I learned it from watching YouTube,” Jayceon shared. “I saw a video where a teacher helped a student who was choking, and that’s how I knew what to do.”

This young observer became an instant hero in Donye’s eyes.

“I was surprised,” said Donye, reflecting on the moment.

Their parents were equally taken aback.

“I was shocked,” said Oluefami Branch, Jayceon’s dad, recalling his panic when he saw a missed call from the school.

He admitted he’s been called to the school before, but this time he was relieved to hear good news.

Donye’s mom, Aja Moore, expressed her gratitude as well, saying, “I didn’t realize until later that Jayceon had given him the Heimlich maneuver. I’m just so thankful.”

Now, Donye is back to playing with his friend, and their friendship is stronger than ever.

The school plans to acknowledge Jayceon’s courageous actions soon, celebrating the bond they share.
