Jim Jones, head of the FDA’s food division, stepped down on Monday due to recent layoffs he described as “indiscriminate.” He felt continuing in his role would be pointless after approximately 89 of his 2,000 team members were let go over the weekend, many of whom were newly hired to enhance food safety measures.

In his resignation letter, Jones expressed his disappointment, stating that he was eager to help reduce diet-related health issues and chemical risks in food. However, he felt the Trump administration did not value the very people who could make those improvements.
Jones also criticized Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the new secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. Jones took issue with Kennedy’s comments suggesting that FDA staff were corrupt and called for the dismissal of nutrition team members. Jones asserted that these allegations were harmful and based on falsehoods.
