Harendra Singh Resigns as Coach of Indian Women’s Hockey Team

Harendra Singh, chief coach of the Indian women’s hockey team, has stepped down, citing personal reasons. He took the job in April 2022 and guided the team to a significant win at the Asian Champions Trophy in November. However, the team faced challenges in the recent FIH Pro League, finishing last and being demoted.

In his resignation statement, Harendra expressed pride in coaching the team. “This has been a highlight of my career. I will always support this remarkable team,” he said.

Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey recognized Harendra’s contributions, particularly his role in leading the junior men’s team to victory in the 2016 FIH Jr World Cup. He thanked Harendra for his dedication and noted that a replacement would be named soon.

While there were whispers about player complaints regarding Harendra’s strictness, these issues were not the core reason for his resignation. Sources indicated that performance concerns led to this decision. The team struggled in the recent season, securing only two wins out of 16 matches, resulting in a disappointing failure to qualify for next year’s league.

Interestingly, Dutch coach Sjoerd Marijne, who previously led the team and achieved a commendable fourth place at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, might return as head coach.
