In a phone interview with the Financial Times, Trump stated, “It’s only appropriate that people who benefit from the strait help ensure nothing goes wrong there.” He warned that a lack of support could lead to troubling times for NATO.
He also highlighted the U.S. commitment to Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia, suggesting that now it’s time for other countries to show their support for the U.S. “We didn’t have to help them… we’ll see if they help us,” Trump noted.
When asked what kind of help he expects, he mentioned requiring “whatever it takes,” including the possible deployment of minesweepers.
NATO, founded to promote peace and security among its members, is not designed to assist a country when it initiates conflict. Trump insisted, “We’re always there for NATO,” questioning why allies wouldn’t contribute to keeping the Strait of Hormuz secure.

Trump expressed disappointment over British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s delayed support for U.S.-led actions against Iran, stating, “When I asked for them to come, they didn’t want to.” Such comments underscore ongoing tensions regarding military collaboration among allies.
