Union Health Minister J P Nadda, speaking in the Lok Sabha, assured that the quality of health services at AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) remains a top priority despite the overwhelming number of patients. Nadda highlighted that the government has successfully enrolled 62 crore citizens under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). This scheme provides health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family each year for secondary and tertiary medical care. The aim is clear: to offer essential health services to those who need it the most.
Historically, the establishment of AIIMS began with former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who opened the first institute. Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee added six more, followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to launch 22 new AIIMS across various states. This expansion reflects the growing need for quality healthcare as the population increases.
The pressure on AIIMS hospitals has led to rising calls for more institutions to meet the demand. In the past year, patient influx has surged, yet the government remains committed to maintaining high standards.
