Free agent quarterback Mac Jones has landed a deal to join the San Francisco 49ers. The agreement is for two years, totaling $7 million, with $5 million guaranteed. This is an exciting opportunity for Jones, especially since he has expressed a desire to work with coach Kyle Shanahan.
At 26, Jones had a challenging season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Last year, he stepped in for the injured Trevor Lawrence, playing in ten games and starting seven. He completed 65.3% of his passes, racking up 1,672 yards and eight touchdowns—though he also threw eight interceptions. His performance contributed to a 2-5 record during those starts, with the team averaging only 15 points per game.
Jones was acquired by Jacksonville last March from the New England Patriots, who had drafted him as a star quarterback from Alabama. The Jaguars traded a sixth-round pick for him partially because of his Jacksonville roots. In training camp, Jones earned the backup role over C.J. Beathard.
Originally drafted 15th overall by the Patriots in 2021, Jones had a promising rookie season. He threw for over 3,800 yards, secured 22 touchdowns, and helped the Patriots reach the playoffs. However, his success didn’t continue. After the departure of offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, the Patriots’ offense struggled under new management. With Matt Patricia and Joe Judge stepping in, Jones faced difficulties in his second season, finishing with a 6-8 record.
In recent years, many quarterbacks have experienced similar ups and downs after their initial successes. According to a survey by the NFL Players Association, young quarterbacks often face pressure that can hinder their development. Jones’ case is a perfect example of how changes in coaching staff can impact a player’s growth.
As the 49ers’ new addition, Jones aims to revitalize his career under Shanahan’s guidance. This could be a turning point for him, a chance to reconnect with his potential and reclaim a starting spot in the league. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how he performs in this new environment.
