Big news in Hollywood: the Directors Guild of America (DGA) is the last major group without a deal with the studios. Recently, SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union, reached a solid agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) after intense negotiations. While details aren’t official yet, insider reports suggest a four-year contract that includes a significant boost to their pension fund.
This follows a similar agreement for the Writers Guild of America (WGA) last month, which also secured long-term benefits like better healthcare plans and protections against artificial intelligence in content creation. AI has become a hot topic in negotiations, with union leaders emphasizing the need for safeguards. Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland insisted on more protections before agreeing to the AMPTP’s proposals.
Both SAG-AFTRA and the WGA have made strides to ensure fair compensation, especially for streaming content. Statistics show that streaming residuals have risen significantly over the past few years, but many feel more still needs to be done. For example, a recent survey indicated that 72% of writers believe they need better pay to match the increasing demands of the industry.
Looking back, these negotiations echo past strikes in the industry. The most notable was in 2007-2008, when writers also battled for better compensation amid the rise of new media platforms. This time, while talks seem more collaborative, the urgency remains as many creatives are still grappling with the effects of the pandemic on their livelihood.
