Mumbai: A 30-year-old man from Bangladesh, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, was arrested on Sunday after allegedly stabbing actor Saif Ali Khan during a burglary attempt. When questioned, he admitted, “haan, maine hi kiya hai” (yes, I did it).
Shehzad was found near Hiranandani Estate in Thane, about 35 kilometers from Khan’s home in Bandra. The police had been searching for him for over 70 hours after the attack took place early on Thursday.
According to the police, a contractor helped track Shehzad to a labor camp hidden in a wooded area. When he realized the police were closing in, he tried to hide but was captured after a seven-hour search.
Officials confirm that Shehzad has been living in Mumbai for four months and was using the alias Bijoy Das. He does not have any documents proving he is in India legally.
Khan was seriously injured in the attack, suffering six stab wounds. Doctors had to perform emergency surgery and removed a piece of broken knife from his spine. They warned that if it had been just a bit deeper, it could have caused severe damage.
In a statement, Khan’s wife, Kareena Kapoor Khan, described the terrifying moment when she saw the attacker stab her husband. “I saw him attack Saif repeatedly,” she recalled.
A nurse who was with the couple’s young son also mentioned that Shehzad demanded ₹1 crore from them.
The police worked hard, analyzing CCTV footage and following multiple leads. Earlier, they mistakenly detained a carpenter who looked like the suspect but later cleared him of any involvement. Another suspect was held temporarily at a railway station in Chhattisgarh but was released shortly after.
As of now, Shehzad is in police custody for five days as the investigation continues.
