Breaking News: University of Alabama System Increases Tuition Across All Campuses – What This Means for Students

The University of Alabama System’s Board of Trustees recently decided to increase tuition for all three campuses. Students will see about a 3% rise in costs, applying to both in-state and out-of-state individuals.

In a committee meeting, Dr. Dana Keith, the senior vice chancellor for Finance & Administration, explained that this change is driven by the growing costs of education. She emphasized the university’s commitment to providing Alabama residents with accessible, high-quality education. However, they can no longer maintain the tuition freeze initiated in 2019 for the upcoming academic year.

Dr. Keith stated, "We analyze any tuition changes very carefully. When we propose an increase, it’s because it’s genuinely necessary." Despite efforts to control expenses, mandatory daily operating costs have gone up significantly.

The specific increases vary slightly between the campuses: in-state tuition at the University of Alabama will rise by 2.67%, at UAB by 2.9%, and at UAH by just over 3%. Out-of-state tuition will see a higher jump, with increases of 3.5% for UA and 3% for the other two schools. After the adjustments, the average semester tuition for non-residents will reach $17,271 at UA, $14,490 at UAB, and $12,695 at UAH.

Dr. Keith noted that they have thoroughly compared these proposed rates with similar institutions to ensure they remain competitive. For in-state students, tuition will be $5,842 at UA, $5,820 at UAB, and $5,345 at UAH.

This increase in tuition reflects a larger trend seen nationwide. According to a 2023 report by the College Board, college tuition and fees have increased more than 200% over the last two decades. In light of this, students and parents are understandably concerned.
