Mittelstadt is starting his first season with the Avalanche after signing a three-year contract on June 25, 2024. He’ll be eligible to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2026-27 season.
This 26-year-old forward has had a solid season, racking up 34 points from 11 goals and 23 assists in 63 games.
“I was surprised,” Mittelstadt shared about being traded. “I sensed something might happen, but it was so close I wasn’t sure. Still, I’m excited. You always want to succeed wherever you are, so there’s some disappointment. But joining a franchise with such a rich history is thrilling. I know a few guys here, which makes the transition smoother. Overall, I’m very excited.”
Drafted by the Buffalo Sabres as the 8th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, Mittelstadt has scored 230 points (77 goals and 153 assists) in 420 regular-season games for both the Avalanche and the Sabres. He also has nine points (three goals and six assists) in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Mittelstadt sees a big opportunity with the Bruins, especially after the team traded away several key players, including Coyle, Brad Marchand to the Florida Panthers, and Brandon Carlo to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
“There’s a big opportunity now with some guys gone,” he noted. “It’s tough to see these players leave. They meant a lot to this team. But it feels like a fresh start, and there are plenty of chances for me. I need to make the most of it.”
He also emphasized his desire to improve his consistency on the ice. “When I’m playing well, I feel really good about my game,” he said.
Bruins coach Joe Sacco mentioned that they plan to use Mittelstadt’s offensive skills, particularly during power plays. “He creates offense. He has great hands, good vision, and makes plays in tight spots,” Sacco said. “We’ll be looking to him to help boost our scoring.”
In related news, 18-year-old Zellers, a third-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, is doing well in the United States Hockey League. He’s tallied 58 points with 37 goals and 21 assists in just 40 games.
Currently, the Bruins hold a record of 28-28-8, sitting just three points behind the Ottawa Senators for the Eastern Conference’s second wild-card playoff spot.
