At least twelve shootings rocked Austin over the weekend, leaving four people injured, including one seriously hurt. Police have detained two teenage suspects and a third individual related to the incidents.
The chaos began Saturday afternoon when a vehicle was reported stolen from an apartment complex. Shortly after, another firearm was stolen from a store. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis noted that these incidents were initially thought to be separate. However, within hours, around twenty additional service calls, mostly from South and East Austin, linked the suspects to more violence.
On Sunday morning, the situation escalated. A man walking his dog was shot in the back. Most of the shootings happened in South Austin, with some occurring at fire stations, including shots fired at a fire truck while personnel were nearby. The teens also targeted apartment buildings, prompting police to go door-to-door for safety checks.
Authorities are actively searching for several suspect vehicles, including different models of Hyundais and a Kia Optima. Chief Davis reported at least four other vehicles had also been stolen. This spree involved suspects robbing cars and randomly firing shots. A surprising detail revealed that security cameras captured the moment when two people were shot while standing outside a store.
Mayor Kirk Watson stated that no clear motive has been discovered, adding to the confusion surrounding these attacks. “What could drive someone to act with such recklessness in our city?” he wondered. Chief Davis echoed this sentiment, expressing her disbelief at the senseless violence.
After a traffic stop led officers from the Manor Police Department and Travis County Sheriff’s Office to apprehend two out of three suspects, the situation led the city to issue a shelter-in-place order. This was lifted once the suspects were in custody. The two apprehended boys are 15 and 17 years old, with the older teen already carrying a theft warrant from the very store where a gun was stolen.
