This World Lung Day, celebrated on September 25, the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS) is highlighting the importance of maintaining lung health daily. Under the theme “Healthy Lungs, Healthy Life,” the focus is on practical actions everyone can take, along with two global initiatives aimed at improving lung disease diagnosis and treatment.
FIRS President, Professor Guy Marks, emphasizes, “Healthy lungs are vital for a healthy life. This day is a rallying call for individuals and communities to take real steps toward better lung health.” He continues, “We also need systemic changes, which is why we’re launching two new initiatives: the Global Lung Health Taskforce and the Improving Access to Inhaled Medicines campaign. Our goal is to revamp respiratory care so that no one is overlooked.”
The first initiative, the FIRS Lung Health Taskforce, aims to change how we assess lung health. It will consider biological and social factors influencing lung function. A significant part of this effort is a Spirometry Toolkit to give professionals a uniform way to measure lung health. Additionally, a Lung Health Index is in development to ensure fair assessments across various populations.
The second campaign, Improving Access to Inhaled Medicines, targets the widespread impact of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. In low-resource settings, access to affordable inhalers is critical. This campaign aims to unite governments, UN organizations, and industry partners to facilitate swift changes. With only five years left to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, advancing this cause is urgent to save lives and reduce health issues.
While these initiatives aim for broad improvements, there are simple steps everyone can adopt to safeguard their lung health every day.
- Breathe Clean Air – Stay away from polluted areas and support clean air measures.
- Be Smoke-Free – Quit smoking and dodge second-hand smoke.
- Stay Active – Regular exercise boosts lung function.
- Get Vaccinated – Protect yourself against flu, pneumonia, and COVID-19.
- Combat Climate Change – Support efforts that cut greenhouse gases.
- Eat Wisely – A balanced diet enhances respiratory health.
According to a recent survey by the World Health Organization, 90% of people living in urban areas breathe polluted air, which can lead to serious lung problems. This statistic highlights the urgent need for collective action in our communities. Let’s embrace these steps—each small effort contributes to a healthier population.
