Ulaanbaatar, April 8, 2025 – Mongolia’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Odontuya Saldan, recently attended the Samarkand Climate Forum. This event, part of the Central Asia-European Union Summit, was focused on pressing environmental issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

Held on April 4–5 in Uzbekistan, the forum brought together environment ministers from Central Asian nations: Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. They discussed various strategies to tackle the region’s environmental challenges.
Countries shared effective initiatives that they have implemented. For instance, several are working on enhancing fruit farming, planting drought-resistant trees in dry areas, increasing urban green spaces, and providing training for environmental professionals. Mongolia shared its successful “Billions of Trees” National Movement, which encourages private sector involvement. Additionally, Mongolia has established the Nature Conservation Trust Fund to support environmental projects and protect endangered species.
The effects of climate change are hitting Central Asia hard. With glaciers melting rapidly and water resources dwindling, food security is at risk. Land is degrading, and ecosystems are suffering. The transformation of the Aral Sea into a desert is a stark reminder of these environmental crises.
To fight these challenges, the countries at the forum discussed ways to enhance collaboration. They explored opportunities for joint research, cooperative projects, and specialized training programs, including those offered by the Green University of Uzbekistan.
Expert opinions suggest that strong collaboration across countries could significantly improve responses to climate issues. A recent survey by the Central Asian Research Institute revealed that 78% of respondents believe regional cooperation is essential for effective climate action.
By drawing on shared experiences and innovative practices, these countries can better prepare for the future. Effective communication and cooperation may be the key to overcoming the significant environmental challenges they face.
