The Bryant University softball team had an impressive finish this weekend, sweeping Maine with a decisive 13-2 victory at Conaty Park. This win capped off a successful three-game series for the Bulldogs.
In the game, Hannah Cochran hit a powerful two-run home run. Sam Rohwer was a standout player too, contributing two hits and three RBIs. Pitcher Grace McKillop had a solid performance, striking out five in her five innings on the mound.
The game started with Maine taking an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. But Bryant quickly bounced back. In the bottom of the first inning, after Meaghan Houk’s single and stolen base, Rohwer drove her home. Cochran then hit her homer, turning the score to 3-2 in favor of Bryant.
The real turning point came in the bottom of the second. The Bulldogs exploded offensively, scoring eight runs. Lexi Powell’s leadoff double set the tone, followed by solid hitting from Laniya Lewis and Coleman. Rohwer’s sacrifice fly and Gracie Bishop’s RBI double helped push the lead to 11-2 before the inning ended.
Bryant continued to dominate in the third inning, with Rohwer hitting another RBI single that scored Houk, finalizing the score at 13-2.
In terms of stats, Cochran’s homer was a highlight, while Rohwer’s and Coleman’s performances were crucial. Coleman stood out throughout the weekend with a notable batting average of .455, totaling seven RBIs in three games.
Bryant’s team batting average soared to an impressive .443 this series, and their pitching staff showcased their strength by striking out 30 batters over 19 innings.
Next, the Bulldogs will face UMass at Conaty Park, where they hope to keep their momentum going.
Softball, like many sports, requires a mix of skill, coordination, and mental toughness. As sports psychologist Dr. Megan McCracken suggests, “Athletes must learn to manage both physical exertion and the psychological demands of competition.” This insight reflects how successful teams, like Bryant, not only excel in skills but also in mental preparedness, which seems evident in their current form.
For those interested, a recent NCAA report showed that over the last year, there has been a 15% increase in home runs across college softball, highlighting a growing trend in offensive power in women’s sports. This makes performances like Bryant’s even more thrilling to follow.
Stay tuned as the Bulldogs look to continue their winning streak.
