In Provo, the Kansas men’s basketball team wrapped up their trip without leading for a single minute. They faced a tough opponent in BYU, who dominated the game with a final score of 91-57.
Richie Saunders was a standout for the Cougars, scoring 22 points and making four 3-pointers. BYU as a whole shot an impressive 53% from the field, showcasing their offensive skills to a packed crowd of nearly 18,000 fans.
Other key players included Trevin Knell, who added 15 points, and Mawot Mag with 13 points on just six shots. Dallin Hall also contributed significantly with 10 points and eight assists. Coach Kevin Young praised his team, saying, “I think this was our best game of the season.”
This win is crucial for BYU as they now sit fifth in the Big 12 Conference, with five games left in the season. Three of these games are away, including a challenging matchup against No. 19 Arizona.
Knell expressed his excitement after the victory, saying it felt like a continuation of their recent success. “We’re stacking team wins, and it really shows in practice and on the court,” he noted.
In contrast, Kansas struggled, suffering their third loss in four games. Hunter Dickinson acknowledged the defeat, stating, “They whooped us today.” The Jayhawks have now faced their largest loss to an unranked team since 1938.
BYU started strong, quickly taking an 8-0 lead. Mag was instrumental in this early surge, scoring seven points in the first minutes of the game. Coach Bill Self of Kansas admitted that BYU played exceptionally well. He reflected, “BYU could’ve beaten anyone tonight. They were great, and we didn’t do anything to slow them down.”
As the game progressed, BYU maintained their lead, shooting 46.9% in the first half and building a 20-point advantage by halftime. They continued their impressive performance, out-rebounding Kansas and capitalizing on turnovers, ultimately controlling the game until the final buzzer.
“We’re hitting our stride at the right time,” Hall remarked. “We focused on our execution, and it really paid off.” This victory certainly puts BYU’s capabilities on display as they aim for even greater achievements in the coming games.
