BYU Students Shine at College Television Awards
Brigham Young University (BYU) made a big splash at the Television Academy Foundation’s 45th College Television Awards, earning 17 nominations across five projects. This impressive achievement secured BYU the title for the most nominations from any university this year.
The College Television Awards, often called the “student Emmys,” highlight creativity and talent among students nationwide. This year, nearly 185 entries competed, with nominations decided by members of the Television Academy.
BYU students stood out, especially in the commercial, PSA, or promo category, where they secured all three nominations. This marks the fifth consecutive year they’ve accomplished this.
One standout, Mia Shumway, who graduated last April, was the writer for two of the nominated projects. Last year, she won for a PSA focused on gender equality in sports. This year, her humorous ad “Ink Up. Wash Out.” features a playful child tattoo artist using Crayola markers.
The inspiration for this ad came during Shumway’s junior year. She locked the idea away until her senior year when she teamed up with talented peers. She praised their skills, emphasizing how their collaboration brought the idea to life.
Her other nominated project, “Never Leave Home,” is a charming ad for U-Haul, featuring a family of ducks. Inspired by her observations of local ducks, Shumway aimed to connect with viewers’ emotions.
She expressed gratitude for her creative team, saying, “It’s fun to be recognized for our collective work.”
Another notable BYU entry, “Gap: Wear With Care,” directed by Porter Christensen, carries a heartfelt message about the impact of self-talk across generations.
Transitioning from student to professional, Shumway shares insights about the BYU advertising program. Unlike many peers who build portfolios in grad school, BYU’s undergrad program provides early hands-on experience. Shumway credits dedicated faculty for nurturing this creative environment.
Advertising professor Jeff Sheets is proud of his students’ achievements. He remarks on their determination and creativity, which he believes stems from a supportive program designed to foster talent. His joy comes from watching students achieve their dreams and making an impact in the industry.
The awards will be announced in March in North Hollywood. Before that, nominees will participate in professional development events, gaining valuable industry insights.
