Cedar Rapids Unveils Exciting 5 Million Casino and Entertainment Complex: What This Means for You!

Cedar Rapids is buzzing with excitement as work begins on the Cedar Crossing Casino and Entertainment Center. This project has been in the works for over ten years and is finally breaking ground.

The ceremony took place on Friday at the old Cooper’s Mill site alongside the Cedar River. It’s expected to boost Iowa’s economy by about $60 million each year, with over $6 million earmarked for local nonprofits.

Justin Shields, who has advocated for a casino in Cedar Rapids, is thrilled to see this project come to life. He strongly believes that the city’s residents have a real appetite for new entertainment options.

“Many claimed there was no demand for this, but I knew differently,” Shields said. “Once this casino opens, it’s going to be a game changer for Cedar Rapids.”

Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell has emphasized that careful thought went into choosing the location. The site will not only enhance riverfront access but also complements the city’s flood protection efforts.

“This is not just about a casino; it’s a major addition to our community,” O’Donnell noted. “This area was empty and lifeless after 2008. Now, it’s getting a fresh start.”

O’Donnell added that the determination of Cedar Rapids residents played a key role in making this project a reality.

“Whether people love gaming or not, we recognized that our town deserves this opportunity and the benefits that follow,” she said. “Everyone came together to support this vision.”

With construction now underway, Justin Shields expresses his joy at the progress.

“Many said I should give up on this dream. They were wrong, and today proves it,” Shields reflected. “I never stopped believing, and now it’s happening.”

Developers aim to open Cedar Crossing by December 31, 2026. This project looks set to transform the local landscape and economy, promising a bright future for Cedar Rapids.
