Could the Next Xbox Break the Mold? Insider Reveals Potential Shift Away from Traditional Consoles

There’s been buzz lately that game developers are gearing up for the next Xbox. The centerpiece of this chatter seems to be Call of Duty 2026, with claims suggesting it would launch alongside the new Xbox hardware. However, an insider recently indicated that we might actually see the next Xbox in 2027 instead of 2026.

Interestingly, this new Xbox might not even be a traditional console. Some say it could resemble a gaming PC with specific hardware that developers can easily work with.

Is This the End of Consoles for Xbox?

Xbox has been facing some tough times. It seems to have lost ground to the PlayStation 5 in this generation of consoles. The Xbox One era feels like a thing of the past. Recently, Xbox promoted the idea that ‘everything is an Xbox,’ suggesting you don’t even need a console to enjoy Xbox gaming.

A former Xbox executive hinted that if Microsoft could, it might stop making hardware altogether.

During a recent episode of The Xbox Two podcast, insider Jez Corden mentioned that big changes could be coming. Instead of a traditional console expected in 2027, he speculated that Microsoft might create “a PC with a TV-friendly design” and a more defined set of specs for developers.

Developers will be working with something akin to a Windows PC, but they’ll know exactly what specs to target for optimization.

Corden also questioned the rumors about Call of Duty 2026, stating, ‘the devkit talk is more about what specs they’ve been told to target for the next Xbox. I’m pretty sure the new hardware is not 2026; it’s 2027.’

The general understanding now is that the next Xbox could be a compact Windows-powered PC that fits neatly under your TV. It may also support a variety of peripherals and have a mode to switch between a gaming setup and a standard Windows interface, making it flexible for both gaming and regular use.
