1. Food Coverage in Dallas — I want to applaud the excellent food news featured in The Dallas Morning News. It’s impressive how much it has changed and evolved over the past two decades.
If you look back 30 or even 40 years, you’d see an even bigger shift. Back then, especially with Executive Editor Burl Osborne leading, the food and dining sections of The News were among the best in the country.
There was a time when The News published two separate Food sections each week—one on Wednesday and another on Sunday. These sections were packed with recipes, cooking tips, nutrition advice, and wine recommendations. They even provided insights on local farmers markets and different types of cuisine. A talented photographer would create stunning visuals to complement the articles.
The Guide was essential for anyone seeking restaurant updates and featured staff-rated restaurant listings, often with two new reviews each week. Moreover, The News hosted a highly regarded wine competition, attracting attention from connoisseurs nationwide.
During that time, Dallas underwent a remarkable culinary transformation. I mention this not to downplay the hard work of today’s team, but to acknowledge the rich history they build upon.

2. Celebrating Gregg Jones — Let’s give a shout-out to Gregg Jones, a journalism teacher at Greenhill School, for his new book, Most Honorable Son: A Forgotten Hero’s Fight Against Fascism and Hate During World War II.
This book shares the remarkable story of Ben Kuroki, the only Japanese American serving in combat for the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. Born in 1917 in rural Nebraska, Kuroki faced many challenges, especially following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, which fueled anti-Japanese sentiment across the country.
Kuroki’s spirit of perseverance in the face of racism and discrimination is truly inspiring. He was determined to fight for the nation he loved, making his story resonate strongly today.
Recently, Jones discussed his book in an interview with Jim Falk, president emeritus of the World Affairs Council of Dallas-Fort Worth. It’s worth noting that Jones has a rich background in journalism, with years of experience including international work, and his books have received critical acclaim.

3. A Shout-Out to My DMN Carrier — During our recent winter storm, my mail didn’t arrive for two days, thanks to the U.S. Postal Service’s struggles. However, my Dallas Morning News delivery person, Sharla Alonzo, was on point. Every morning, between 5 and 5:30, my paper was right on my front walk.
This kind of dedication deserves recognition. Thank you, Sharla!
