Celebrate National Environment Day: Join the Movement for Conservation, Climate Action, and Community Engagement!

Kota Kinabalu recently hosted a meeting between officials from the Federal Department of Environment (DOE) Sabah and Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Seri Christina Liew. They discussed preparations for the upcoming National Environment Day (HASN) celebration.

Daisy Aloysius, Deputy Director of the Sabah Environment Protection Department, introduced the new DOE Sabah Director, Nor Rashidah Mohd Ghazali. Other attendees included Senior Principal Assistant Director Amir Hamzah Musa and Senior Assistant Director Chai Hsieh Nee.

This year’s HASN event is organized in partnership with several groups, including the Sabah Wetland Conservation Society. Liew expressed excitement about the event, noting the involvement of students, NGOs, and the community.

The celebration is set for November 8 at the Kota Kinabalu Wetland Centre Ramsar. Activities will include a mangrove walk, replanting efforts, a special exhibition on upcycling electronic waste, and a collection drive for household e-waste.

Liew will also award prizes for competitions held among schools and universities, including drawing and infographic contests.

Notably, this year’s HASN is a refreshed version of the long-standing Malaysia Environment Week, which has taken place every October since 1991. Nor Rashidah emphasized that HASN aims to raise awareness about eco-issues such as pollution and climate change while fostering community engagement in environmental conservation.

Research shows that involving youth in environmental initiatives is crucial. According to a 2022 survey by the World Economic Forum, 75% of young people believe that addressing climate change should be a top priority for governments. Engaging the younger generation can lead to innovative solutions and a more sustainable future.

By hosting events like HASN, Sabah is taking steps to educate and involve its citizens, particularly the youth, in caring for the environment.
