Young adults across the globe are coming together like never before, eager to learn about Jesus Christ and build friendships. The Institutes of Religion, part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is set to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026, marking nearly a century of support for young adults in their faith journeys.
What started in 1926 at the University of Idaho has now expanded to over 2,700 locations in 170 countries. This growth speaks to the increasing need for community and belief among young adults today. To mark this centennial, a special Worldwide Devotional will take place on February 1, 2026, from the Conference Center in Salt Lake City. Young adults globally will be able to join in on this celebration.
Historically, the institute began as a small initiative, with J. Wyley Sessions appointed to teach religion classes. As church leaders recognized the critical role of guiding young adults, the program expanded rapidly, especially in the mid-20th century. Leaders like Neal A. Maxwell and Jeffrey R. Holland helped shape its curriculum and focus. In recent years, innovations such as the Innovate Institute have kept the program modern and relevant.
Recent numbers highlight a surge in participation. Roughly 457,000 young adults now engage with institute programs—an impressive 30% increase in just two years. This growth includes about 35,000 students from different faith backgrounds, showcasing the program’s appeal. When combined with the seminary, both educational programs are approaching a milestone of one million participants, making it one of the largest religious education initiatives in the world.
If trends continue, the centennial year could welcome one million participants in total. Young adults are encouraged to “Be ONE in a Million,” emphasizing community centered on Jesus Christ. Whether they’re entering college, starting careers, or exploring faith, there’s a place for everyone to belong. All are welcome, from those returning to church to those curious about faith.
