Galloway, N.J. – Friends and family recently celebrated the legacy of Eric Illjes, a former coach at Stockton University, by creating the Eric Illjes Memorial Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship honors his significant contributions to the university’s women’s volleyball program.
Illjes played a key role in building the volleyball team. He started as an assistant coach in 1993 before becoming head coach in 1999. Under his leadership, the team achieved remarkable milestones, including its first NCAA tournament in 1999 and its first tournament victory in 2000.
With an endowment of $30,000, the scholarship received strong support from Illjes’ family, including his niece Jennifer Hall and her husband Jerry, along with his brother Theodore, sister-in-law Carolyn, and friend Greg Langan. “This scholarship supports Stockton students who reflect Eric’s commitment to excellence and service,” said Dan Nugent, vice president for University Advancement at Stockton University.
Jennifer Illjes shared, “He loved everything—life, the ocean, his friends, and students. We wanted to keep his memory alive through this scholarship.” Illjes, who served in the U.S. Army and had a distinguished career as a scientist and mentor, passed away in May 2024. The scholarship will benefit students pursuing degrees in Marine Science, a field he was passionate about.
In his coaching career, Illjes boasted an impressive record of 157-90 and earned New Jersey Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors three times. He led his team to over 20 victories in six of his seven seasons. Even after retiring, he stayed connected with the program by hosting team breakfasts at his home in Ocean City, nurturing the spirit of camaraderie.
The Stockton University Foundation aims to boost student success by offering scholarships and supporting academic programs. According to a recent survey, 68% of students in the US cite financial aid as essential for their educational aspirations. By gathering community support, the foundation helps remove barriers that stand in the way of students achieving their dreams.
As President Joe Bertolino noted during the gift signing, “A true legacy is measured by how people remember you and how they pass that knowledge to others.” With the scholarship, Illjes’ memory and impact will continue to inspire future generations.
