Publix recently hit a remarkable milestone: they have donated over 1 billion pounds of food since starting their food donation program in 2009. This achievement was celebrated during the company’s Hunger Summit, where Publix leaders and representatives from Feeding America got together to discuss ways to help those facing food insecurity.
Kevin Murphy, Publix’s CEO, expressed pride in the efforts of their team, noting the significant impact of their work. “Our associates have truly made a difference by providing nourishment to families in need,” he said. This commitment shines through not only during the summit but in the ongoing partnership with Feeding America.
The food donation program began modestly in a few stores and expanded across the company by 2011. It involves donating food that is still safe but cannot be sold. The program has greatly evolved, and last year alone, Publix set a record by donating more than 115 million pounds of food.
Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, the CEO of Feeding America, praised the collaboration, stating, “We are thrilled to celebrate this achievement as we continue to work together toward an America where no one is hungry.” The scale of this donation is staggering; it would take over 22,000 Publix trucks lined up to carry that much food, stretching over 300 miles, roughly the distance from Jacksonville, Florida, to Atlanta.
In addition to this milestone, Publix Super Markets Charities announced a $6 million grant to support select food banks. This initiative aims to fund one-time projects like facility improvements, showing Publix’s deep commitment to enhancing community support. John Doran, the Executive Director of Publix Charities, emphasized the importance of helping their neighbors and building capacity for food banks.
Since 2015, Publix Charities has dedicated over $69 million to fight hunger. Every bit helps in making sure less food goes to waste, and more gets to those who need it most.
Currently, Publix is running its biannual Good Together Hunger Campaign, allowing customers to donate during checkout to support local food banks. The campaign is bolstered by a generous donation of $5 million in fresh produce, emphasizing the role of fresh food in addressing hunger.
