In Doha, Qatar, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, H.E. Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, recently celebrated the winners of the “Buthra” Platform Awards during Qatar Environment Day 2026.
This recognition highlights innovative efforts aimed at promoting environmental sustainability in Qatar. Notable attendees included Dr. Ghanem Al Ali from the Ministry of Culture and Eng. Ali Mohammed Al Kuwari, CEO of Msheireb Properties.
The awards garnered significant interest, with 193 entries submitted from various sectors of society, signaling a rising awareness of environmental issues in the country. Categories included the Environmental Creativity and Innovation Award, the Environmental Photography Award, and the Sustainable Environmental Camp Award. The diversity of submissions showcased a wide range of ideas, focusing on challenges like climate change, biodiversity, and pollution reduction.
Dr. Farhoud Hadi Al Hajri, Director of Public Relations at the Ministry, praised the high-quality entries. He emphasized the importance of transforming creative concepts into real-world projects, stating that the “Buthra” platform fosters innovation and community involvement in environmental protection.
The Environmental Creativity and Innovation Award, open from August 31 to October 30, 2025, saw five winners. First place went to Mohammed Mubarak Hamad Ahmed Al Sulaiti and Reem Ghanem Al Sulaiti for their project “Design Without Waste.” Their initiative underscores the increasing trend towards sustainable design and circular economy principles.
According to a recent study by the Global Environmental Change Journal, the rise in environmental awareness isn’t just a local concern; globally, 74% of people are now willing to change their habits to help the planet. This trend is encouraging for countries like Qatar, as it reflects a collective shift toward sustainable practices.
