A dedicated educator from Wexford County has received the prestigious Excellence In Education award from the Michigan Lottery.

Meet Betty Clark, a high school math teacher at Manton Consolidated Schools. She has been teaching for 21 years, with the last 13 spent inspiring her students in this role.

Since 2014, the Michigan Lottery has recognized outstanding educators through the Excellence In Education program. Each week, a deserving teacher is chosen, receiving a $2,000 cash prize. At the end of the school year, one winner will be named Educator of the Year and will receive an additional $10,000.

Betty’s achievements will be highlighted in a news segment on local stations including WXYZ-TV and FOX 17. The segment featuring her will air tonight.

Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli praised Clark for her engaging teaching style and her commitment to students beyond the classroom. “Ms. Clark goes above and beyond,” she said. “Her dedication and passion make her a standout educator.”

Clark was inspired to teach by her own great math and physical education teachers. She believes that spreading the joy of learning is essential, saying, “My students keep me going. They make every day enjoyable.”

A student nominated Clark for the award, emphasizing how she makes precalculus exciting. The student noted her effort in organizing events like an Amazing Race midterm that revisits all the math learned throughout school. Clark also supports the cross-country and track teams, cooking meals for athletes and even joining them in practice.

To qualify for the Excellence in Education award, nominees are evaluated based on various criteria:

  • Excellence: Demonstrating a significant impact on students’ academic success.
  • Dedication: Consistently surpassing expectations to support students.
  • Inspiration: Motivating others to achieve their best.
  • Leadership: Displaying strong leadership skills within the school.
  • Effectiveness: Showing measurable positive results in students’ education.
