As India prepares to celebrate its 79th Independence Day on August 15, 2025, the theme of “Naya Bharat” reflects a vision for a prosperous, self-reliant, and sustainable future. This vision honors the heroes of the past while encouraging innovation, inclusivity, and a commitment to our environment.
One shining example of this dream is Modhera, a small village in Gujarat. It has transformed into India’s first 24/7 solar-powered village, showcasing what is possible with renewable energy.
Modhera’s transformation stems from an extensive renewable energy project that combines a large solar plant in nearby Sujjanpura with rooftop solar panels installed across the village. With a 15 MWh Battery Energy Storage System, this project ensures that residents receive uninterrupted power, even at night or on cloudy days.
The project received over Rs 65 crore in funding from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the Gujarat government. It includes smart energy meters, electric vehicle charging stations, and sustainability features like sensor-based street lighting. Additionally, the historic Sun Temple now hosts a solar-powered light show, showcasing the blend of modern technology and heritage.
Residents like Ramila Ben have felt the positive changes firsthand. “We used to dread high electricity bills,” she shares. “Now, my home runs entirely on solar energy, and we even have air conditioning at night without worrying about costs.”
Beyond Modhera, India’s solar industry is booming. The country recently achieved a significant milestone: a manufacturing capacity of 100 GW for solar photovoltaic modules. This leap from just 2.3 GW in 2014 highlights India’s rapid strides in becoming a global leader in solar manufacturing. Thanks to initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive Scheme, around 100 manufacturers now operate 123 production units nationwide. This growth aligns with the nation’s ambitious goal of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
Experts believe Modhera’s model could inspire other villages across India. Rajendra Mistry from the Gujarat Power Corporation emphasizes, “Battery storage is key to providing true 24/7 solar energy. Modhera shows that renewable energy can meet all needs—whether households, public spaces, or agricultural requirements.”
The project stands out not just for its energy benefits but also for preserving cultural heritage. The Sun Temple, a UNESCO tentative site, now shines brightly thanks to solar power, merging history with sustainability.
As people celebrate this Independence Day, Modhera exemplifies freedom that goes beyond politics. It signifies liberation from energy insecurity and environmental challenges. Social media, too, buzzes with pride over this milestone. Leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi have highlighted Modhera’s success as a testament to India’s manufacturing capabilities and clean energy goals.
