On Thursday, SpaceX’s Starship had a dramatic flight. Just when it hit space, it began to lose control and spun out of contact. This led to significant disruptions for flights in Florida as authorities worried about debris falling to the ground.

SpaceX later confirmed on social media that Starship exploded during the flight, what they described as a “rapid unscheduled disassembly.” This incident raised concerns as it meant debris from the spacecraft could scatter along its flight path. The FAA responded by closing airspace over southern Florida and immediate ground stops were issued at major airports, including Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

The FAA reported delays not just in Florida, but at airports as far as Philadelphia and Newark due to the incident.

Before losing control, Starship was performing well until about 20 seconds before it was expected to finish its ascent. This milestone is usually a key success for the rocket’s flights. Suddenly, some of its engines shut down prematurely, which caused it to spin out of control, according to SpaceX’s Dan Huot.

Huot remarked, “We still have much to learn about this vehicle,” during the company’s live coverage of the flight. This was the second consecutive flight of Starship that ended in an explosion as it attempted to reach space, representing another setback for Elon Musk’s ambitious goals.

SpaceX quickly started working with safety officials to address the situation after losing contact with the craft. This incident follows a previous Starship explosion that resulted in debris raining down in the Caribbean, leading to FAA intervention and an investigation.

Huot emphasized that SpaceX has protocols in place to handle such situations, including debris response areas designed to coordinate closely with air traffic control. They are determined to keep the public safe, and those measures were activated immediately after the incident.

After the January flight, SpaceX made upgrades targeting the issues that caused fuel leaks and fire. They had received FAA approval to fly again, only to see Starship face another failure.

Moving forward, SpaceX plans to analyze the data from this recent flight to understand what went wrong. The outcome is crucial not just for SpaceX but for the future developments in the space industry.

Despite the challenges, Starship remains a significant player in the push for affordable space travel. It is designed to be the largest and most powerful fully reusable rocket. Previous flights have shown its potential, with successful missions resulting in safe landings and impressive recovery maneuvers.

SpaceX had high expectations for Thursday’s flight, which aimed to deploy mock Starlink satellites into orbit and conduct stress tests during the rocket’s descent back to Earth. Unfortunately, it never got the chance to complete those objectives.

This recovery was part of a broader vision by Musk, who founded SpaceX in 2002. His ultimate goal is to transport humans to Mars, with Starship serving as a key vehicle in that mission. Not only does he foresee it carrying astronauts and materials to the Moon, but Musk also imagines it could transport up to one million people to Mars, enabling the establishment of a new city there.
